Key West
Today's Key West Photo

January 12 2006

I took this photo the other day at the south end of White Street, at the foot of White Street Pier, a long time Key West landmark and attraction! (That's a plug for the Key West Chamber of Commerce)

The phone booth is a typical Key West faux scandal that made the front page of the local Key West newspapers, and reported on the radio. What happened is that a number of the booths with ad's for a brand of Rum seemed to appear overnight.  One Key West City official was reported stating that he would get to the bottom of it and personally confiscate the phone booths if they broke the law. Residents complained in a local Citizen's Voice that they were placed in the middle of sidewalks along Smather's beach, and there was just general offense that while Key West needed many things, advertisements for rum on phone booths wasn't one of them.

However, it turned out that the company that put them up had approval and a contract with the city of Key West where the city will share revenue from the ads and coins from people who use the pay phone.  "Opps, we forgot" seemed to be the position of the city commission.

And recently, someone complained that these Rum Drinking promoting pay phone booths have been place next to an elementary school. The story is not over yet I'm sure....
